Photos of the Staglieno Monumental Sculptures

Photo Art Series by Paul E Williams
From the photo series "Stone". According to art historian Andrew Graham-Dixon, the best collection of Italian Naturalistic sculptures can be seen at the Staglieno Monumental Cemetery in Genoa. Also known as Bourgeois Realism the sculptures depict the well off Genoese from mid 1800's to early 1900's. Staglieno is certainly an impressive size covering over a square kilometre of hillside above Genoa.

The naturalistic sculptures on the Staglieno tombs are also very impressive with intricate detail on clothing, skin textures and even eye lashes. The statues depict exactly how the Genoese looked in the mid 1800's. Frame #2 below is a wonderful example of the Italian Naturalistic art. It depicts Caterina Campodonico, a well known old women who sold peanuts in Genoa market. It was completed while she was still alive by sculptor Lorenzo Orengo. She is depicted in beautifully detailed clothes of the era carrying strings of nuts and bagels for sale.
