Icarus Revealed #9
From the Photo Series Icarus Rising by Paul E Williams
In 2020 I was reviewing my archives and came across the original transparencies I used to make a Polaroid lift animation in 2001 and decided to re work the photos to make a new animation and a series of stills projects.
How the Polaroid Animation Was Made
To make the original Polaroid animation in 2001 I first did the studio shoot with the model wearing mechanical wings on Ectachrome 6x7. I then copied the 6x7 transparencies onto 10x8 Polaroid 804 using a Sinar P camera. The emulsion was then lifted off of the polaroids and laid into a shallow back lit opaque perspex water bath. I could then animate the Polaroid lifts recording each animation frame onto Ectachrome using a Mamiya RB67. The 6x7 film was then scanned and lined up in After Effects and exported it as an animation.
I hope you find the photos and process interesting. If you want to see more Icarus Polaroid lifts click here
