Dire Straits On Every Street
“I took these photos at the Old Air Studios that overlooked Oxford Circus in London. Mark Knopfler was doing the final mix of the album and was using the whole top floor studio complex. On my part it was a hard decission as whether I could use this polaroid technique on this project as it was such an unpredictable technique. As a professional photographer I cannot allow unpredictability on a shoot so I took a leap of faith.
The 803 black and white polaroids were taken using wooden Gandolfi 10x8 view camera and I solarised them to get the effect. Although there was very little to see on the black backing of of the polaroid, Mark Knopfler got the idea and chose Frame # 2 above for the album cover. I include some others that have never been seen before for your enjoyment ”. Paul E Williams
