English Surfaces - North Yorkshire - Photo Art
England is a divided country and always has been. There is the North of England, the South of England and Cornwall, each having its own identity. The north of England is a mystery to many southern English. Until recent years there was a soft border between the two called the Midlands. In recent years the southern English have moved in increasing numbers to the north to escape the crazily over expensive south. Like much of the north of England, North Yorkshire still has hints of what made England English but it is disappearing fast. Photos by Paul E Williams.
English Surfaces - Castleton Winter 2 - Photo Art
Through the winter my daily walk with Benji, the dog in the photos, takes me up onto a hill that overlooks Castleton. When the snow falls the landscape is transformed and the walk become a new photographic adventure. Photos by Paul E Williams.
English Surfaces - Castleton Winter 1 - Photo Art
I like the snow unlike many of my neighbours in Castleton. I like the way it redefines the landscape, revealing itself in a different way. With global warming the big snow falls of the past are over. Some years there is sometimes enough snow to keep me happily clicking away for a few days. Photos by Paul E Williams
English Surfaces - Castleton Summer - Photo Art
With global warming we don't seem to get spring in Castleton any more. Winter just seems to suddenly end and early summer begins. The transformation is though dramatic as the bleak winter landscape evolves into a paradise of green. Photos by Paul E Williams
English Surfaces - Castleton Autumn - Photo Art
I have had a house in Castleton in North Yorkshire for 20 years, and today it is my base I return to. I was lucky when imprisoned by the COVID restrictions that I had somewhere interesting to re-examine. This series is the first time I have photographed the village and I have learnt a lot doing so. English Surfaces - Lymington no 3 - Photo Art
Shops say a lot about a place. Lymington is a shabby Chic sort of town. Photos by Paul E Williams.
English Surfaces - Lymington no2 - Photo art
Lymington sums up what I hate most about the English. There is an inherent fear of the outside world. Walking around the suburbs of Lymington is like walking around a ghost town. There are plenty of cars in driveways but nobody to be seen. I get a very strong impression I am being watched though, I can feel the curtains twitching. Seems like paranoia is contagious in Lymington. Photos by Paul E Williams.
English Surfaces - Lymington no1 - Photo Art
Lymington and old port on the Solent in Hampshire. Like most of southern England its demographic is a middle to upper class. Everyone seems to drive and there are very few pedestrians. Nobody is seen carrying bags of shopping back home. It almost feels like a ghost town. Photos by Paul E Williams
